History of Diamonds

Diamond is the allotrope of carbon where the carbon atoms are arranged in an isometric-hexoctahedral crystal lattice. Its hardness and high dispersion of light make it useful for industrial applications and jewelry. Diamonds are thought to have been first recognized and mined in Golconda,India approximately before 6000 years.Since then India led the mining and trading of diamonds till 18th Century. In 1725 largest deposits of diamonds discovered in Brazil and the monopoly of Indian diamond industry was eclipsed by non Indian diamonds from the Latin American country.In 1870's diamond mines were discovered in South Africa and other African countries.Today the leading producers of diamonds are Russia,African continent,Australia,USA and Canada.De Beers, the South Africa based company leads in the production and distribution of industrial diamonds.
